Why Are There Never Enough Therapists?

All across the nation, schools are experiencing a shortage in special education therapists, including speech therapists, occupational therapists, and school psychologists. Reasons therapists do not stay at schools is multifaceted. Therapists have reported poor working conditions. This could be due to a staggering amount of paperwork, a sense of isolation from the rest of the school, credentialing barriers and delays, as well as a number of other reasons. Perhaps they prefer not to deal with all the travel time involved with some of the more rural school districts as it takes away from actual therapy time.

So what can be done about this issue? One of the solutions schools have started to turn to is the use of teletherapy. Through the use of teletherapy, therapists can now see students from several school districts in multiple states without all the wasted travel time. This also allows them to have more time for required paperwork involved the students’ IEPs. Teletherapy also provides schools with access to more specialized therapists to meet their students’ individual need.

Lighthouse Therapy wants to help. We are dedicated to making sure schools meet their therapy needs. Whether that is through providing speech therapists, occupational therapists, or school psychologists.

Telepractice Partnerships with Autism Services in Education

I have been an SLP for over 24 years and in that time, I have seen many success stories with the use of telepractice, autistic students, and parent support. Research continues to support what I have experienced as a telepractioner.

In the referenced article from a study conducted at Michigan State University, their findings in a pilot study show, “…the online program successfully helped parents of children with autism improve their child’s social communication using research-based intervention techniques.”

With the increase in children diagnosed with ASD, the need for intervention services continues to outpace the availability of therapists.  By implementing services via teletherapy, geographical location becomes a non-issue.  The student can be thousands of miles away and still receive the services in a format that they are responsive to and increase the amount and frequency of services that are so desperately needed.

At Lighthouse Therapy, we want to partner with schools to do exactly that.  Let us help you to meet your district’s needs for speech, occupational and counseling services.

Positive Teletherapy Outcomes For Students With Autism

Many educators wonder if teletherapy can be an effective tool for autistic students. The uncertainty can cause professionals to hesitate when considering teletherapy. Research, however, suggests that teletherapy may have better results than in person services.

Teletherapy provides several advantages over face to face services. For some students, the barrier between them and the therapist reduces behaviors caused by sensory overstimulation. Teletherapy also allows for more flexibility in scheduling sessions around students particular daily rhythms.

In case studies done on this subject, more often than not, it has been observed that students achieve better results with teletherapy.

While teletherapy greatly helps autistic students, there is still more research being done on this topic. For more information, visit the link below.
