You will operate in a consultative framework four days per week via virtual platforms, empowering campus teams, teachers of the visually impaired (TVIs), and parents to integrate mobility concepts into the student's daily routine. To ensure clinical precision and regulatory compliance, you will travel up to three times per year to conduct comprehensive, hands-on, in-person O&M assessments.

  • Model: Hybrid (4 Days Remote Consultative / Up to 3 Target Onsite Travel Windows per year)

  • Location: Must reside in Texas or hold valid credentials to practice immediately in the state.

  • Schedule: Follows standard school calendar operational hours.

Key Responsibilities

1. Virtual Consultative Services (4 Days/Week)

  • Collaborative Coaching: Provide remote consultation, coaching, and strategies to Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs), classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, and parents to reinforce O&M goals throughout the school week.

  • IEP Development & Compliance: Participate virtually in Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee meetings. Draft measurable IEP goals, objectives, and progress reports based on objective data.

  • Remote Skill Monitoring: Review video submissions or live-streamed travel environments to guide local staff on proper cane techniques, scanning patterns, and safety interventions.

2. Onsite Comprehensive Assessments (Up to 3 Times/Year)

  • Field Evaluations: Travel to assigned Texas school districts up to three times per school year to conduct required, high-stakes, in-person O&M evaluations.

  • Authentic Environment Testing: Evaluate students in real-world contexts, including complex street crossings, intersecting hallways, cafeteria navigation, and community-based instruction (CBI) routes.

  • Formal Reporting: Author legally defensible, comprehensive O&M evaluation reports that satisfy Texas Education Agency (TEA) requirements and establish clear programming needs.

Qualifications & Requirements

Required:

  • Certification: Active, valid certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) from the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP).

  • Travel Capability: Willingness and physical ability to travel across Texas regions for up to three intense assessment windows annually.

  • Clearances: Ability to clear standard Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) fingerprinting and background checks for school personnel.

Preferred:

  • Thorough understanding of the Texas Education Code regarding visually impaired students, Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC), and ARD committee processes.

  • At least 2 years of experience managing a school-aged caseload.

  • Experience utilizing telepractice software, learning management systems, and digital data collection.
